On March 22nd 2018 De Donkere Kamer was at the Stadsschouwburg in Sint-Niklaas.
Guests included Dutch portrait photographer Robin de Puy. She talked about her new project ‘Randy’, which is currently on show at Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht. De Puy was not alone. She was joined by Belgian photographer Sébastien van Malleghem, who presented ‘Réagir’. NOOR-photographer Kadir van Lohuizen was also in Sint-Niklaas. He showed his latest series ‘Wasteland’. Furthermore, artist Veronika Pot explained her new series ‘Wasp me to the Whales’. And, as usual, Stijn Meuris treated the audience to a spoken column based on a photograph.
Pitchers of the evening were Simon Debbaut-L'Ecluse, Marwan Bassiouni and Sam Vanoverschelde. Winner of the evening was Simon Debbaut-L'Ecluse.
Robin de Puy:
Robin de Puy, born in 1986 in the Netherlands, was first introduced to photography as a means of dealing with her anxiety. This, combined with her interest in the rest of the world was her starting point to take portraits. De Puy graduated from the Fotoacademie Rotterdam in 2009. Her final project, “Girls in Prostitution,” resulted in her winning the Photo Academy Award 2009. A few years later, in 2013, she received the National Portrait Prize. De Puy’s work is not limited to her own projects as she has been featured in several magazines and newspapers.
Kadir van Lohuizen:
NOOR-photographer Kadir Van Lohuizen, from the Netherlands, has spent the last couple of years researching six megacities in the world in regards to the very real problem of waste. His project “wasteland” aims to shed a light on what could happen if the problem is not taken care of in a timely manner. Van Lohuizen's series won first prize in the category environment stories of the World Press Photo Contest.
Sébastien Van Malleghem:
During 2016-2017, Belgian photographer and Nikon Ambassador, Sebastién Van Malleghem ventured to France to photograph his series “Réagir.” The project finds itself in Nord-Pas-de-Calais, one of the poorest areas in France, where Van Malleghem captures the daily lives of its inhabitants.
Belgian visual artist Veronika Pot has, in the past, spent time capturing what memories could look like. She has since then expanded this series to“Wasp Me to the Whales” in which she emphasizes the need to let go “the traditional reading mechanism of photographs.”
